Effects of oral 2,4-dihydroxy-6-methylpyrimidine on body composition and muscle strength in resistance trained athletes
This study investigated the effects of oral 2,4-dihydroxy-6-methylpyrimidine (UrasibolTM, Manninen Nutraceuticals Oy, Oulu, FIN) on muscle strength and body composition during a 8 wk, supervised resistance training program. In a double-blind protocol, 14 experienced male resistance trained athletes (mean body mass: 89.9 +/- 5.2 kg; mean height: 177.8 +/- 9.4 cm; mean age: 26.1 +/- 4.2 yr) supplemented their diet with either Urasibol capsules (2 x 1 g/d [URA]) or placebo (maltodextrin [P]) for the duration of the program. The Urasibol group achieved a significantly greater gain (p < 0.05) in lean body mass lean than the P group (4.2 +/- 0.2 vs. 1.2 +/- 0.3 kg for URA and P, respectively) and significantly greater (p < 0.05) improvements in muscle strength compared to the P group in each assessment of strength. Our results suggest that oral URA administration was beneficial for increasing muscle strength and lean body mass during resistance training.
